MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO SELECTS
M. ZUCKERMAN
PUBLIC RELATIONS & MARKETING, INC.
NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA –
July 24, 2007- Madeline Zuckerman, President of M. Zuckerman Public
Relations & Marketing, Inc., has announced that her firm has been
selected by Mission San Juan Capistrano to handle the public
relations for the Mission’s 2007 “Romance of the Mission” Gala on
September 14th.
All monies raised from this years Gala will go to the restoration
and preservation of the South Museum Wing of the Mission. Today all
of the South Wing is original and remains intact, except for two
rooms built west of the dormitory. The Gala will feature a concert
by one of the most talked about upcoming American tenors on either
side of the pop/classical divide, Michael Amante. Michael Amante
first made his mark at The Mission in 2004 when he wowed the
audience with the first concert in the Great Stone Church in over
two hundred years. Mission Preservation Foundation President, Tony
Moiso, has announced that the Honorary Chair of this year’s Gala
will be Erma Jean Tracy.
Known as the “Jewel of the Missions,” Mission San Juan Capistrano
was founded November 1, 1776 by Padre Junipero Serra. It was the
seventh mission in the chain of the twenty-one California missions
which were established by Spain. The Mission prospered for nearly
fifty years until Mexico declared its independence from Spain in
1821. In 1845 it was sold to Don Juan Forster and was used as the
family residence until it was returned to the Catholic Church by
President Lincoln in 1865.
Today over 330,000 guests visit Historic Mission San Juan Capistrano
each year, a place of inspiration, education and preservation.
Preservation measures continue to take place at this historical and
cultural site.
Construction of the South Museum Wing of the Mission began in 1778
with three rooms, in what is now the western portion of the South
Wing, serving as a kitchen and temporary residence for the
missionaries. In 1779, it was extended to the east and west to
provide a permanent residence for the priests and to serve as a
dormitory for the unmarried girls of the Mission. When the Serra
Chapel was completed in 1782, an open space was left between it and
the priests’ living quarters. This gap was filled in 1800 with a
sala built of fired brick. The sala has undergone several changes
and has had multiple uses as living quarters, temporary place of
worship, and Father Mut’s residence.
